I honestly wasn't sure if I was going to make it to Alt this year. I was so excited to go but the morning sickness hit me earlier than I expected. But lots of prayers and zofran later I managed to show up for the two day conference and I'm so glad I did.

I hung out with Caitlin Creer and Christina mostly but I was able to chat with some friends that I met last year and some new friends that I met this year.

Alt is fun for a number of reasons. The people are interesting, the atmosphere is exciting the food and hotel are amazing and the all of the speakers are so inspiring.

Ben Silbermann from pinterest shared his inspirational story and received a standing ovation afterwards. It was truly amazing and an experience I'll never forget. Let me just say that Ben is one-of-a-kind. I've never met anyone like him.

His speech was so inspirational and he got a well deserved standing ovation at the end of it.

There were a few panels I really enjoyed this year.

Jenny, Kirsten, Morgan Satterfield and Emily spoke on a panel The Ins and Outs of Interior Design blogging. I was really interested in Jenny's portion. She talked about how she always though the blog and the separate design business were really hard to manage at the same time but she realized that the business fed the blog and vice versa. I agree. It's so much easier to find things to blog about when I'm working on client projects. She also touched on spending 10% of your time on inspiration ie. blogs, pinterest, magazines.. and 90% of your time on perspiration meaning actually getting out there and shopping, working on clients homes or your own home etc.

Emily Henderson gave some great tips on styling your projects for photographs. This was advice I really needed. A few of her tips that I liked:

- It's okay to show stems in vases

- If you have tight flowers use a blow dryer to open them up a bit.

- Combine open and closed flowers in a bouquet to make it look more natural.

- Create asymmetrical shapes

- Don't use gerber daises unless it's for a kids room or party.

- Use lots and lots of pretty books to style.

- Fake or half eaten food is a no-no.

- Square objects should be straight on and have stuff on them.

I also enjoyed the panel by Erin, Danielle, Meg and Sarah on Building Relationships with Ad Networks and Sponsors.

I feel like sponsors and giveaways are still a mystery to so many people. There are new rules coming out all the time on regulations and laws regarding these things and the only way I get to hear about them is by going to things like Alt. Honestly I'm still a little confused. Basically I know that I need to start doing some research before I do any more giveaways. You can read some more info on what I'm talking about here. I also learned about the types of sponsors you should be taking. Make sure they are a good fit with your brand and blog. Make sure they are honest and have values as a company. You can even think about having some kind of document for them to sign stating that they are such. Go into blog advertising as, "Once I take money from you you are on my team and I will do everything I can to help you make money". Don't be a person that will just take any sponsor or any giveaway. Know your worth.

Friday morning I attended a round table discussion on Tax and Accounting for bloggers. I'd been looking forward to this one. Caroline Devoy spoke at this table and she was really knowledgeable. Basically you can write off what you blog about if you feel it is promoting your business or is a business expense. You need to be careful though as to how you label things. Make sure you call them "Creative Supplies"

One of my favorite panels last year was Growing Your Readership so I decided to go again this year. Jordan, Kelly, Nicole and Maggie spoke at this one. Some of the points I liked from this one:

- A well designed blog is a prerequisite now. Have a professional look and make yourself look bigger than you are.

- Blog about what people are searching for on search engines. For example holidays, big events like the super bowl etc.

- What's your story? Are you the girl who is building a house, fixing up a house, starting a business, writing a book etc.

- If you have a good idea put it out there immediately before someone else does it even if you don't have the idea perfected right now.

Jordan gave the best advice on my opinion on growing your readership. She outlined ways to actually post original content.

- Design beautiful layouts for your posts. Take a normal photo and add a beautiful graphic. This will also help your pictures get pinned.

- Blog about your experiences. No one else can have the experiences that you have. Experiences with travel, clients, in school, in your everyday life etc.

- Share expertise. If you are an Interior Designer teach people how to become better designers. If you are a party planner guide people on planning the perfect party etc.

- Post from your own research. Find ways to pull inspiration from the past and put your own spin on it.

I attended lots of other great panels but those few were my favorites. I hope I get to attend next near and I hope to see you a lot of you there!

Wow that post took me like a whole week to write. I would work on it for 5 minutes and then take a nap or get something to eat or just stare into space. Seriously I'm a mess right now! I hope you enjoyed that recap now I am going to go watch some t.v an lay on the sofa.

Alt Overload

I am back from my 2nd time at Alt Design Summit and I am on information overload. I have so many things to share with you! I'll try and get it all organized into a nice blog post for you.

I can't even begin to tell you what an awesome time I had. I doubled up on my zofran prescription during Alt and managed to actually feel pretty good. It was seriously a miracle.

Jett's New Headboard

Thank you all SO much for your nice comments about morning sickness. I read each and everyone of them. I think even just having all that support helped the most! I switched my Zofran prescription to the melt in your mouth kind and so far I'm feeling a little better.

With a new baby on the way I'm more motivated to get Jett's bedroom done. Guess what got delivered over the weekend!

His new headboard! I had Brian from Rocky Mountain Upholstery make it and he did an incredible job. Now as soon as I get some energy back I'll hopefully get this room finished!

I'm pregnant!

It is great news and we are very excited but as some of you may have already noticed I've been really sick. I thought for some reason that I would be able to push through this yucky stage and just be myself and get things done but it's not shaping out to be that way. I have spent mot of the last week and a half in bed trying to keep food down. I hope you will all bear with me while I take a short blogging break. I'll blog when possible but for the most part I'm going to be focusing on keeping this baby and myself healthy. I'm still really early. Only 6 weeks so I debated if I should even say anything but I'm sure you'll all start to wonder sooner or later why I'm not blogging as much.

Keep me in your prayers while I try and get through this difficult first trimester. Thanks everyone!

...and if any of you have any tips you can share on morning sickness relief I would love to hear it! I'll take all the help and advice I can get.

Getting Organized for the New Year

With the new year I suddenly had motivation to get my office more organized. I've talked about Russel and Hazel on my blog before because I really love their products. I keep all my paper work stored in their Signature Three Ring Binders.

So I ordered a new one to get the new year rolling!

I also love how well all their products are packaged.

I also got a few of these Kate Spade Notepads from my wonderful husband for Christmas. They are the perfect size to take throw in my bag and take to appointments.

I also got this little jotter set to take notes at my desk.

I've put together a little mood board for you today with a few products that I'm dying over.

The inspiration for this board comes from this fabric. I am a little in love with it. If I had a little girl you can bet this would be in her room. Just look at all the color possibilities!

West Elm just introduced this fabulous little light fixture and I'm obsessed with it! I am trying to justify buying it for Jett's room.

Caitlin posted this rug a few weeks ago and I just love it! It comes in a variety of great colors too.

My design style is ever changing. Never in a million years would I have believed we would build a house on 13 acres in the woods......but I love it! I tend to stick with peaceful, soothing colors that can easily mix with different patterns and prints. Many people that visit us make the comment that we "built a beach house in the woods." How right on the money they are!! I think overall our style if very eclectic. A mix of country, coastal and traditional pieces that make us feel completely at home!

Gray & Orange Bedroom Before and After!

A few months ago Jenna from Q.A. Design contacted me about helping her with her little boy's room. Jenna already has really great taste so it was really a matter of creating a concept that she could run with.

Here are the before pictures of the room.

Here is the plan I created for her.

We wanted a fun space that her boy could grow with. This plan introduced great patterns and colors and it's definitely a room that any age could enjoy.

Here is the after!

The bedding is from West Elm. The roman shades were made by Windows By Melissa using this fabric by Dwell Studio.

The dark orange pillow was made by Erin from Plush Studio. The fish pillow is from Alice Lane.

Custom Portrait done by Birds of Ashmae.

The funky rug was found at CB2 but has since been discontinued. The gray lamp is from Alice Lane.

The whale bookends are from Alice Lane.

The turtle is also from Alice Lane. It's a little box. The shell opens!

Trophies and canister are from Alice Lane. The boots were already owned by Jenna.

The orange frame and dog are from Alice Lane. The elephant print is by Sarah Jane Studios.

Best of 2011 on 6th Street

2011 was a year full of goals for me. My new year's resolutions included getting a website up, having at least three projects photographed and re-doing my blog layout. I accomplished all of those goals! It's been really great to compile this roundup of my favorite posts and some of biggest accomplishments from 2011. Enjoy!

In January I attended Alt and loved it! I learned so much. I helped my sister complete a DIY sunburst mirror. Jett also got some new curtains. I went on Studio 5 to talk about mixing prints in your home.

In February I made notecards out of my old calendar. An e-design project I helped with was featured on Design Sponge. I started my "good-to-great" series with a big reveal. My dad enlisted my help with his mayoral office. I love adding "Ks" all over my house and in February I added a little color and glitter K to my office. After attending Alt in January I decided to make some big changes to my blog. I started off by conducting a survey and then responding to your suggestions here. I also added a new chevron pillow to my life!

March was an exciting month for me. My home tour was featured in Adore magazine. This was a huge step for my little business. One of my projects was featured on Design Sponge. I started my house tour with my living room. I went on Studio 5 to do a curtain segment. I revealed a before and after makeover of my credenza. I also posted about an e-design board that I did here.

In April I added to my house tour by showing off my master bedroom, Jett's room and kitchen. I revealed an e-design bedroom before and after. I also finished Jett's bathroom! I busted my butt to finish my mom's guest room for $500. It took a lot of work but it was a fun project to do. My house was featured on Apartment Therapy. That was a dream come true for me. I also got to go to High Point with Bryn in North Carolina. I also shared some of my favorite designer confessions as part of my Confessions of a Designer series.

In May I added some much needed pink to my master bedroom! I also changed out my blog header and made some other layout changes. I continued my house tour with my office pictures.

In June I revealed a bedroom before and after and I showed another client project update. I did some kitchen updating. I was really excited to show you all one of my very first before and after projects! I got to go on Studio 5 to share some of my favorite etsy artwork.

July was a fun month! I showed off a living room reveal. It was an exciting moment for me. I loved how the room turned out. I blogged about another client project during the middle of the month. I had an e-design success and I shared the before and after on my blog. Summer brought a front porch makeover! I shared a nursery before and after as well.

In August Jett turned 2 and we celebrated with a nautical birthday party. I also shared a little sneak peak of a local project I was working on. Kirsten Krason Interiors was launched! I was pretty excited about that. I threw one of good friends a sprinkles themed baby shower.

In September I threw a Peacock Bridal shower for a close friend of mine. It was a blast! I welcomed Fall by doing a front porch makeover. I was honored to be featured in Latter-Day Woman magazine.

In October we had our family pictures done by Jylare and I got around to starting up a Kirsten Krason Interiors Facebook page. I shared a one hour consult before and after.

In November I shared an e-design before and after and I finally got my powder room done. I also shared a little chair makeover that my client did. I announced that I was going to be decorating a model home. I also got to share a gift guide for kids in House of 50.

In December I hosted the 2nd annual Blogger Holiday Social with Alice Lane. I also shared my Holiday decor with all of you! At the beginning of the month I reveled a living room before and after makeover that I did. I had the opportunity to do a roundup of my favorite products for Adore Magazine. I also shared my favorite winter products on Studio 5!

Our New Year's Eve Bash

This year we hosted a New Year's Eve party at our house. I love to throw a party and this one was no exception. We played minute-to-win-it games until midnight.

It was seriously a blast. We got most of the ideas from here. Some of the games included moving an oreo from your forehead to your mouth, knocking over water bottles with a ball that was inside pantyhose which was on your head and pulling out an entire box of tissues.

Christmas Recap

We spent a couple of days before Christmas at my families cabin up in the mountains. It was snowy and relaxing. Just what I needed.

My family is the best. We have fun wherever we go.

Christmas was spent at my parents house.

Me and all my sisters the morning of Christmas right before Church.

Josh had to fly Christmas morning so it was really great to be with my family and Jett.

And the happiest news of the day was this new car Jett got from his Grandma. He seriously won't get out of it for anything.

Mountain Retreat

Thoughts on Pinterest and my New Favorite Pins

Pinterest is quickly becoming everyones newest obsession. Sometime I wonder if it's replacing blogs. What do you think? I used to check blogs first thing in the morning but now I find myself hopping on Pinterest as soon as I wake up.

Are blogs still needed? Sometimes it scares me think that Pinterest is quickly becoming everyone's favorite ways to find DIY ideas, beautiful images and inspiration. I think it has given all bloggers a wake up call. No longer is just posting pretty pictures going to cut it. I think now we are all needing to find new ways to stay original. Somehow we need to show you things that you can't find anywhere else.

What are your thoughts about it?

2nd Annual Alice Lane Blogger Holiday Social

Last night was our 2nd annual Alice Lane Holiday Blogger Social. It was so fun! Alice Lane came up with the theme "Merry Christmas Darling". They came up with the most beautiful invitations to send out.

There was a handmade vibe and the name tags reflected that.

We drew names to see who went home with our gift.

My Neighbor Gifts

This year I decided to give out Martinelli's for our neighbor gift. I didn't want to spend a lot of time making something so these were easy and not too expensive. I think it was like $2.50 per gift. I bought some fabric from a local fabric store for $5 a yard. I cut it up and wrapped it around each bottle.

I added some of Fifth and Hazels' gift tags and I was good to go! Super easy and yummy. This is a great gift to give if you don't have time to come up with something before Christmas because it's perfect for New Year's Eve!

My Home for the Holidays

So I got out all my Christmas decor that I've used for years and years and I decided that I was sick of it. Does that happen to anyone else? So I've changed up some things and added a few new pieces that I really love.

Welcome to my Home at the holidays!

I bought this welcome mat at Pottery Barn. It was on sale for like $20 I think. I love it because it's wintery and not Christmasy so I can keep it out all season. Plus the little blue bird matches my house!

I saw this amazing window decal on Pintrest and I became obsessed with it. I wanted to recreate the look without the $120 price tag. So I bought some window paint online and just drew it myself. It is obviously not as cool looking as the decal but it's close enough.

and you can't beat the $9 price tag!

I also loved this sweet little mistletoe on Ohdeedoh. I decided to attempt one for myself. It was kinda time consuming but I loved how it turned out.

I love love love boxwood. This wreath found on etsy looks really cute on my backdoor.

I also saw these cute scalloped garlands on Pintrest and I decided to give it a try. They were really easy to make. I just bought some glitter foam sheets and cut out the scallops then sewed them together.

The little cottage print is from Sarah Jane Studios.

The santa is from Russia. I lived there for 5 months and bought it then.

The terrarium is from Etsy as well.

And who can forget my little penguin friends from Wish Daisy.

I bought these christmas lights last year after Christmas. I though they would look great in a little bowl.

I wanted to dress up my bathroom a little bit so I bought this DIY paper garland from Paper Source.

Every year I put out a little tree with ornaments that I bought in Russia. It's really colorful and I love it.

Behold my gingerbread house! I made one this year with my mom and sisters and it took us FOREVER. But it was really fun and I hope it becomes a tradition.

This year I decided it was finally time to get stockings. I decided to keep them all white. So they will all be different but each will be white. This way I don't have to buy a bunch of matching ones as new kids come along but they will all look good together. Jett's is from West Elm.

Another craft I decided to attempt was this holly garland from Me oh My. It took a really long time to cut out all those leaves! But I think it was worth it.

I hope you enjoyed a little tour of my Holiday Decor this year. It was really great to change things up and add some new things. Now that it is all decorated I can sit back and sip some hot chocolate and listen to some Christmas music!

Colorful Living Room Before & After

When I first went out to visit Candace her room wasn't half bad. Here is what it looked like.

She had these beautiful ikat slipper chairs. Her sofa was nice with beautiful nailhead trim and she already had a fun rug. But she wanted to liven the place up!!

The living room also opened up to this empty space.

It was a big empty space. So she need major space planning help.

Here is the after!

The first thing we did was paint the walls. This helped the sofa stand out and eliminated all the beige blah that was going on before. And then we needed window treatments!

We used Wilmington in Multi. Erin made the draperies and I have to say they are so beautiful in the room. My client also found a giant wall clock for above the sofa.

The blue chevron pillow was made by Erin. The red pillow is from West Elm.

The coffee table is from Crate and Barrel and the rug is from Williams Sonoma Home. It was a killer deal.

The t.v. wall needed something fun so we did a very subtle tone-on-tone wallpaper from Walls. It even has a little shimmer to it which makes it really cool. The amazing lamp is from Robert Abbey. It is large and in charge!

Now for that pesky area adjacent to the Living Room. We went through a few different ideas for this space but we finally decided on two chairs and a couple of ottomans.

Candace found these chairs on KSL and totally reupholstered them herself.

Candace was a dream client to work with and I'm so glad we were able to create a living area that she loves!

Project Sneak Peak

E-design Before and After

My cute client Holly came to me with a living room that was in desperate need of some life. It also needed to function as a living room/foyer. She needed some kind of surface for keys and other odds-and-ends.

Here is the before.

She sent me this as her inspiration picture.

We both liked the earthiness of the room. We wanted to capture this room but on a much tighter budget.

Here is what I came up with.

We decided to solve the problem of the lack of an entryway by using this nook in her room for a console table. She had another sofa there before because she wanted seating. So we swapped the sofa for two chairs. She also painted tone on tone stripes in the nook. This is like a fun little surprise in the room.

Erin made us some beautiful chevron draperies. The ikat pillow is from World Market.

Holly was a dream to work with. This room goes to show that small updates can go far!

Guess what! My powder room is done! Finally. If you follow me on Facebook then you saw a sneak peak a few weeks ago.

I feel like it's been a long time coming. Back in May I posted a few different options for wallpaper. Thank you to Walls for the wallpaper. They had such a great selection it was hard to choose. I finally decided to go with Thibaut Serendipity. I love it.

I also received these two beautiful flamingo prints from Eastwitching. The picture frames are from Pottery Barn.

One day I will replace the light fixture above the sink. I just haven't found the perfect thing yet. The faux bamboo mirror was a downeast find. It's originally from Williams Sonoma home.

My husband bought me this seahorse toilet bowl cleaner for our anniversary. I'm probably one of the only people in the world who would get excited about a toilet bowl cleaner as an anniversary gift. It's really cute and it goes really well with the bathroom.

So there you have it!! Thanks for all your help in making the final decision on the wallpaper.

Feature Friday: The Lovely Cupboard

I love the name of Heather's blog, the Lovely Cupboard. It has such a nice ring to it. Her home is just as lovely as her blog. I asked Heather to introduce her home and here is what she said

"Hi there! I'm Heather from The Lovely Cupboard. I had to pinch myself when Kirsten asked if she could feature my house. Being one of my favorite blogs, I stop by 6th Street often to find design inspiration. I've discovered that my own personal style is a reaction to make my first home, a 1940's Tudor style cottage, feel fresh rather than just old. My husband and I picked our house because we love older homes and the character that comes with them. While I've always collected antique and vintage pieces, I started feeling like my home was looking more a like a museum than the fresh space I'd envisioned. I started incorporating bold fabrics and new pieces mixed in with flea market finds to make sure that things didn't feel too stuffy. Luckily, I've also inherited some pieces that my family has collected from literally all over the world. These heirlooms add a global feel to my house and have such meaning to me as well. I have some really fun stuff planned for Jett's big boy room. It is all centering around a headboard that is going to be made in this fabric. The fabric arrived last week and I've like literally been drooling over it. I wish I could have done it as curtains but let's be honest I seriously could not afford 6 yards of it. I think a headboard will pretty cool though. More updates on this room coming soon...

Budget Finds for the Model Home

I would say this model home is going to be a good mix of high-end products mixed with budget finds. That is how I like to approach most of my rooms. I've been searching all over the place for good deals. Here are a few great deals I've found on products for the model home.

An entire upholstered queen bed for $599 from Costco! It even has some nailhead detailing. This will be going in the master bedroom.

This media piece is only $399 and it looks really beautiful. I'm not sure about the quality. You'll have to read the reviews but the shape itself is really great and I love the pulls on the doors.

You know I love to frame a calender. This one is getting framed in the office. I also love this one. I wish I had a place for it.

Speaking of the office this chair is going to be at the desk. I'm not sure how sturdy it is but for a model home I think it's perfect. Plus it's only $33!

I'm finding lots more stuff everyday. I can't wait till the home is finished and I can share all the sources and info with you!
